Restaurant bill settlement
Split the bill fairly, down to the cent
Enter the pre-tax bill, tax, and tip. Split equally or by each person’s subtotal, choose whether a percentage tip uses the pre-tax or after-tax amount, and see how any last-cent adjustments are handled.
No payment, account, or names. Calculations stay in this browser. Check the receipt for actual taxes, service charges, and automatic gratuity.

Rounding adjustments redistribute cents from independently rounded shares so all displayed amounts add exactly to the grand total. Check your receipt and agree on the split with your group.

How the bill is calculated
Tax is either the exact amount you enter or the subtotal multiplied by your tax rate, rounded to the nearest cent (half-cent rounds up). A percentage tip is based on either the pre-tax subtotal or the subtotal plus tax—your choice. A fixed tip is used as entered.
For an itemized split, each person’s entered pre-tax subtotal is the share weight; tax and tip are allocated in those same proportions. For an equal split, each person has equal weight. Money is handled in integer cents. When shares do not divide evenly, remaining cents go by largest fractional remainder, with ties assigned in person-number order.
What is a rounding adjustment?
A visible penny reconciliation
If you round every person’s tax and tip share separately, the rounded figures can be a cent or two above or below the bill total. This page shows each person’s independently rounded amount before adjustment, the cents redistributed, and the final amount due. The final row verifies that every person’s final share adds exactly to the grand total.
For itemized splits, person subtotals must add exactly to the pre-tax subtotal. For equal splits, a leftover cent is assigned deterministically by person number. Review the adjustment with the group before collecting payment.
Receipt and fee reminders
- Use the tax line and tax rate shown on your receipt; local taxes and discounts may differ.
- Check whether a service charge or automatic gratuity is already included. This page does not add those amounts automatically.
- This is arithmetic only—not tax, legal, or payment advice. It does not process payments or collect names.
